BBC Worldwide, commercial subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation, had plans to build a video on-demand platform for web and mobile that allowed their customers to access content from a library spanning over 7,000 hours of video. Fluxus joined the project as a delivery consultant partner to build the project with BBC Worldwide’s in-house technology division.

The platform had to be consistent with the rest of the BBC’s online presence and be seamlessly compatible with BBC iPlayer. This meant a single sign-on was essential, as well as cross-platform access for users’ purchased media content. To satisfy these needs, Fluxus led the build using Drupal CMS, integrating it with BBC’s OAuth2 and iBroadcast API, Google Apigee, and Salesforce. The result was the ability for a user to sign in with existing BBC login credentials, with added authentication for security reasons. Content compliance requirements were managed using automatic rights management, and a range of pricing and promotional options were also included to create a robust e-commerce experience.

A smart caching system was implemented to handle high traffic while maintaining the high volume of media, and content could be kept fresh with constantly-changing displays using the editorial controls within the CMS. Content discovery was enabled through a Solr-powered search and extensive categorization, ensuring users could always find what they’re looking for, and be recommended content they would like.
