BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the British Broadcasting Corporation, wanted to develop a video on-demand platform that could access its extensive catalogue. To do this, they recruited Fluxus to build the platform, which was named BBC Store.
A big requirement for this project was consistency with the rest of the BBC’s online presence, and the BBC Store platform had to be fully integrated into this. More specifically, the integration between BBC Store and free-to-watch BBC service iPlayer had to be seamless. For this, a single-sign-on between the two was necessary, as well as purchased content being available in either of the two websites or applications. In addition to this, there were a range of e-commerce features to be added, with comprehensive content licensing compliance.
The project utilized a Drupal CMS integrated with BBC’s OAuth2 and iBroadcast API, as well as Google Apigee and Salesforce. These came together to form a platform that was compatible with and accessible from other BBC properties, with customers’ existing BBC ID logins. Automatic rights management features were added to satisfy licensing needs, and the platform could handle high traffic through efficient caching. Content served to users was kept fresh through an intelligent search and content catalogue system, as well as editorial control displaying relevant new updates.
